So this is what I actually sent:

I hate to be cold and somewhat insensitive in reply to your good news [he got a job] but feel that I should be up front - albeit a little late. While I appreciate your phone calls and e-mails I don't think I'm interested in pursuing this relationship further. I apologize if I led you on by agreeing to see you again when you asked but I felt as if I were being put on the spot seeing as how we hadn't even quite finished our first meeting. Posing the question at that time made me bit uncomfortable and I felt I couldn't be as up front as I should have been.

Once again, I apologize.
